The Orbus Centre in Ngumbe, Malawi, was opened on 31 July 2010 and is held in trust by the CCAP Blantyre Synod in partnership with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria (Australia) to be used for the purpose of caring for orphans and vulnerable children.
By encouraging and developing a partnership between volunteers from Australia, and elsewhere, and the local communities such as Ngumbe, Orbus also hope to develop and nurture relationships and open up a network for their community which may provide opportunities to enhance their future. Orbus’ motivation comes out of a concern for the spiritual and physical wellbeing of orphaned children.
Programmes within the center include:
1. The Orbus Nursery School for Orphans and Vulnerable Children.
2. The Orbus Primary School.
- The school has classes from standard one to seven.
3. A Nutrition Feeding Program
- Feeding vitamin and minerals enriched porridge to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) every morning Monday to Friday.
4. Agricultural/Farming Project
- This is done to provide income to make the Centre self-sustainable. This includes vegetables; tomatoes; sugar-cane; various crops such as maize, pigeon peas, soya beans and sunflower seeds; fruit trees including mango, guava, banana, paw-paw, orange, tangarine, lemon, avacado, passion fruit and grapes; 600 blue gum trees for poles and firewood; pig, goat and chicken breeding.
